The Ugly Step Sisters

2018

Mixed Media Bunraku Puppet

This was a Creative and Therapeutic Arts first year group project, involving Odyssey Hijinx Theatre group and students from The Marion Centre at the Bishop of Llandaff High School in Cardiff. The 'Ugly Step Sisters' puppet was created for Hijinx to use in their Christmas production 'Hansel, Gedeon and the Grimms' Wood'. The collaborative process in making the puppet offered an exciting and valuable experience for all involved.

Fellow course peers and myself held numerous creative workshops at the Marion Centre for a class of key stage three students with Autistic Spectrum Condition. The pupils offered an imaginative input of ideas for the puppet and we included as much as possible in the design. A notable feature from the students are the fabric drawings on silk, which were sewn in the main dress.

Being involved in this creative experience exposed me to the value and enjoyment for each aspect of the journey. From designing, to construction and interactive collaborations in-between, there was a sense of flourishing for all involved.
